The most recent Mega Millions draw took place on Tuesday October 7— numbers were 17, 26, 33, 45, 56, with a Mega Ball of 19 — but there were no jackpot winners.

But no jackpot winners doesn't mean no winners at all. A ticket holder in New Jersey matched all five numbers in Tuesday’s draw, but not the Mega Ball, for a cash prize worth $3 million. Two other tickets bought in California matched five numbers - but also did not manage to match the Mega Ball - and won $4 million and $5 million respectively.

The last person to win the Mega Millions jackpot bought their ticket in Virginia. It was worth $348,000,000 and was the biggest lottery winner in the Old Dominion ever. The ticket was won following the new layout of the Mega Millions lottery implemented by Lottery officials in April when Mega Millions ticket costs were increased to $5 a play, but with some tasty caveats including:

• An increase in the odds of winning a cash prize. This is due to a smaller range of numbers to pick from for the draw.
• A revamp of the Megaplier add-on. Now included as a given for every Mega Millions ticket.
• A minimum jackpot of $50 million. A number that can only increase week on week if jackpot draws are not won.

The Publix supermarket where it was bought later received a $100,000 retailer bonus for selling the lucky ticket. This win followed an unprecedented run of 31 consecutive drawings without a jackpot winner, swelling the prize to historic levels before finally being won. This Florida win cemented itself as not only the biggest Mega Millions jackpot but one of the largest in world lottery history.

$1.269 Billion — California December 27 2024

In late 2024, a $1.269 billion jackpot ticket was sold in Cottonwood, California, marking this the largest Mega Millions prize ever awarded in the state. The lucky ticket was purchased at Sunshine Food & Gas, also known locally as a Circle K store, which received a $1 million retailer bonus for selling the winning ticket.

The winner was Rosemary Casarotti, who chose to remain largely out of the public eye. Casarotti selected the lump-sum cash option, valued at about $571.9 million. In addition to the personal fortune, the drawing generated over $89 million for California’s public schools.

$800 Million — Texas, September 2024

A ticket purchased in Sugar Land claimed the entire $800 million Mega Millions jackpot, marking one of the largest prizes ever awarded in the game’s history. Although the winner’s identity was not immediately disclosed, Texas law allows prize recipients some privacy, and many choose to remain anonymous.

The jackpot ranked among the top Mega Millions prizes nationwide, and the winning draw continued to highlight the long odds of success — roughly 1 in 302 million.
