Mega Millions Multiplier
The Multiplier is an exciting feature to Mega Millions that boosts non-jackpot prizes by a random amount. It’s an instant add-on to your ticket, no extra fee required, so keep reading to find out more about how this works.
Your Prizes Are Multiplied
Every Mega Millions player receives their own random multiplier when they enter a draw. This number is instantly printed on your ticket at the time of purchase and will be one of the following: 2X, 3X, 4X, 5X or 10X
So, instead of winning just the base amount listed on the odds and prizes page, you could take home significantly more.
Example: If you win the second-tier prize of $1 million and your ticket shows a 10X multiplier, you’ll actually walk away with $10 million, without matching all the numbers and without paying anything extra!
Even the smallest prize gets a boost. While the base amount is $5, (the price of your ticket) the Multiplier guarantees you will actually win at least double that, or potentially even 10X the amount! There’s no more ‘breakeven prizes’, if you're winning, you're winning big!
And because each multiplier is randomly assigned per ticket, two players with identical numbers can walk away with completely different winnings, depending on which multiplier they receive.
Multiplier Odds
Although multipliers are randomly assigned, some are more likely to appear than others. The lower multipliers, like 2X will appear more times than the higher ones, like 10X. Here’s a full table of the odds of each multiplier appearing.
Multiplier | Odds of being generated per play |
---|---|
2x | 1 in 2.13 |
3x | 1 in 3.2 |
4x | 1 in 8 |
5x | 1 in 16 |
10x | 1 in 32 |

History of the Multiplier
The Multiplier feature launched on April 5, 2025. It was part of the Mega Millions 2025 updates which came with some significant changes to the game including, a bigger starting jackpot, and an increased ticket price.
The Multiplier replaced the Megaplier which was an optional $1 add-on to Mega Millions. The Megaplier worked differently: one additional number was selected after the main draw (either 2X, 3X, 4X or 5X) which determined how much every non-jackpot price was multiplied by. Everyone who opted in got the same multiplier for that draw.
California was the only state where the Megaplier wasn’t available due to its pari-mutuel prize structure. However, as of April 2025, California has adopted the new multiplier system, making it available to players in all participating states.
