Mega Millions Jackpot Passes $500 Million Mark: Excitement Builds

On the November 3rd Tuesday draw, there were no jackpot winners for the 28th draw in a row, and the resulting jackpot rollover has boosted the grand prize to over half a billion dollars! Here's what it means for the game and its fans…

The Latest Mega Millions Draw

As mentioned in the intro, Tuesday's draw was the 28th consecutive Mega Millions draw with no jackpot winners, or the 27th consecutive jackpot rollover, depending on whether you count the starting jackpot or not.

The winning numbers were 4-24-31-62-74 with 3 for the Mega Ball, but it wasn't a great night for prizes. Despite there being just shy of 300,000 prizes won, only four players won prizes in the Third prize tier, and none in the second. The jackpot for that draw was estimated at $482 million, but since it wasn't won, it's now estimated to be a $505 million annuity for the Friday 6th draw, while the cash option will be in the ballpark of $210 million.

Could records soon be broken?

$500 million is a worthy milestone in its own right, but this Mega Millions jackpot still has a long way to go before entering the top-ten. The current tenth-place record to beat is the $803 million jackpot won by a single ticket in Florida on July 28th – the last Mega Millions jackpot to have been won, in fact.

Impact of the Powerball Jackpot

At the time of writing, the Powerball jackpot is at $835 million and has been eclipsing the Mega Millions jackpot for most of its current run. This could potentially be hampering the growth of the Mega Millions jackpot as players opt to chase the bigger of the two jackpots.

However, that could all change overnight if the Powerball jackpot gets won before the Mega Millions jackpot. In that instance, Mega Millions would be the biggest lottery prize in the World, let alone the USA, and it would be far in excess of Powerball's starting jackpot of $20 million. The Powerball jackpot does tend to grow faster since it has three weekly draws while Mega Millions only has two, but a gap that size would take a very long time to close.
