Mega Millions Jackpot Climbs to $212 million: it’s the largest Jackpot in the world

Nobody matched the five winning numbers plus the Megaball in last Friday’s draw and for the third time in 2018 the first prize has surpassed $200 million. The jackpot has rolled over 14 times since the last win in May.

No jackpot winner on Friday’s draw

The next Mega Millions draw takes place on Tuesday 26th  and will raffle off an impressive jackpot of $212 million (cash option $126 million). At the moment, that is the largest jackpot among all the worldwide lotteries, since nobody scooped the first prize in the draw held last Friday 22nd June.

The numbers drawn were: 2-6-11-27-44 - Mega Ball 20 - Megaplier 2x.

While nobody managed to win the main jackpot, a total of 539,746 winning tickets were sold for Friday’s drawing, considering all prize tiers. The highest of them was held by a player from Georgia who matched all 5 white numbers and won $1 million, the 79th second-tier prize won so far in 2018.

In the 14 drawings following 4th May, when the jackpot was last won, there have been a total of about 6.4 million winning tickets all over the participating states at all prize levels, including 14 tickets worth $1 million or more.

When Has the Mega Millions Jackpot Been Won in 2018?

The Mega Millions Jackpot was last won in Moraine, Ohio on May 4th, when the ABC XYZ Trust claimed the prize of $142 million and chose to take it in a lump sum worth $84 million.
This year there were two other jackpot wins.
On January 5th, Shane Missler, a 20 year old from Port Richey (Florida), won a $451 million prize and decided to take the money in a cash lump sum worth $281.2 million; while on March 30th Richard Wahl of Vernon (New Jersey) claimed the $533 million jackpot, an amount that he also decided to collect in a lump sum for the amount of $324.6 million.

Those wins are respectively the fifth and the fourth largest wins in Mega Millions history. Wahl’s win is also the second largest single-ticket win ever for the lottery.

The fact that in 2018 there were two jackpot wins that placed in the top 5 highest of all time is most likely due to the changes that were introduced in October 2017: among the most important changes there was an increase of the minimum jackpot amount from $15 to $40 million, which makes it easier for the jackpot to reach very high amounts quickly.
