Patricia Busking, a retired healthcare worker from Palos Heights, Illinois has stepped forward and claimed the Mega Millions jackpot of $393 million from the Friday August 11th drawing. The jackpot is the fifth biggest Mega Millions prize in the history of the game and is the largest lottery prize ever claimed in the state of Illinois.
Patricia bought her ticket at Nick’s Barbecue on Harlem Avenue in Palos Heights while she and her husband were picking up a few steak sandwiches for dinner. She noticed the size of the jackpot and opted to try her luck with five Quick Pick tickets. The couple said that they buy tickets for both Mega Millions and Powerball when the jackpot amounts are high and, on this occasion, they were “in the right place at the right time!”
Patricia described the moment she realized her good luck as “a surreal, out of body experience when I saw all those numbers that matched.”
Before claiming their prize, the couple received financial advice from an expert and consulted family members. They decided to take the lump sum payment of $246 million.
The couple plans to donate a portion of the prize winnings to a few their favorite charities and to share the money with friends and family. Nick’s Barbecue will also receive a vendor’s bonus of $500,000 for selling the ticket. An employee, Jeff Keenan, commented on the win, saying: “It's been incredible for business.”
