10th June 2020 3:10 PM
On Tuesday, June 9 a single ticket sold in Arizona matched all the six numbers drawn. It's the first Mega Millions jackpot ever won in the state.
An individual from Arizona won the Mega Millions jackpot last night by purchasing a $2 ticket! The $410,000,000, with a cash option of $316,800,000, was the first winning of Mega Millions in Arizona that’s ever occurred.
The following numbers were drawn on Tuesday, June 9:
1-5-9-10-23 - Mega Ball - 22 - Megaplier 2x
13 tickets matched the five white balls. Nine were worth $1 million (2 were sold in Michigan, Pennsylvania and Washington, and 1 each in Florida, Maryland and Minnesota).
Four of the "Match 5" winning tickets were worth $2 million each because they included the Megaplier (2 in New York and 1 each in Mississippi and South Carolina).
What Happens when an Individual Wins the Mega Millions jackpot?
The latest Mega Millions winner will have 180 days to claim the reward by showing up at the Phoenix or Tucson lottery office, according to Arizona rules. The shortest time frame to claim your prize is 90 days but it varies in different states in the US. However, there are a few more things to do before you show up at your local lottery office. It’s very important that you have solid proof that it’s your particular ticket by signing on the back of it and also making a photocopy of it for safekeeping. Also, you may want to tell your family and friends about your victory, but it is advised that you hold off from that until you’ve spoken to a professional financial advisor and the lottery office. Winning the lottery is always great news but it’s also good to have your plans in order on what to do with your money. Hence, hold off from popping your champagne bottle just yet!
In addition, there are two options for you to choose from once you’ve won the lottery. You can either decide to receive a one-off cash lump sum or to accept the full value of the jackpot in annual payments over 29 years. It’s completely up to you, and it all depends on the player’s situation. There’s also the fact that you have to face a few tax rates. A federal tax of 39.6% is due on all jackpot Mega Million prizes. Firstly, 25% is taken instantly before you receive your reward and a further 14.6% is to be paid at the end of the tax year. Lastly, there’s also the option to become public or remain an anonymous winner. Some particular states in the US allow for an individual to choose to remain anonymous such as Dakota & South Carolina. Last year in 2019, Arizona joined a number of states allowing winners of big lottery prizes to remain anonymous. For more information, click here to know more about the winning aftermath process.
The next drawing is on Friday, June 12, and it restores to its current starting amount of $20 million ($15.4 million cash).
