New York Couple Win $5 Million Mega Millions Prize with Megaplier

New York Couple Win $5 Million Mega Millions Prize with Megaplier

Norma and Paul Fox, a New York couple who have been together for 54 years, have won a Mega Millions prize of $5 million from the drawing on September 22nd. The retired couple matched the five main numbers drawn to win the second-tier prize, just the Mega Ball shy of the $104 million jackpot prize. They opted in to the supplementary Megaplier, which increased their winnings to $5 million, the largest prize that can be won when adding the game’s multiplier.

What were the winning Mega Millions numbers for September 22nd?

The winning numbers were 5, 39, 54, 63, 66, Mega Ball 15 and the Megaplier was 5. You can view the winnings numbers and prizes awarded in each tier on the Numbers page.

Norma and Paul weren’t the only Match 5 winners on the night, as there was one other ticket holder from Michigan who won the Match 5 prize of $1 million without the Megaplier option. The jackpot was won by Wayne Harris from Homer New York, and in total there were more than a million prizes paid out on the night of the drawing. You can learn more about the prizes on offer in each tier on the Mega Millions Prizes page.

Where was the winning ticket sold?

Paul, who previously worked for Chase Bank in Manhattan, enjoys playing lottery games regularly. He was carrying out errands when he decided to buy a Mega Millions ticket with Megaplier from Hook Food Mart at 98 ROA Hook Road, Cortlandt Manor.

After the drawing, Paul checked his numbers online and couldn’t believe how much the couple had won, "I forgot I played the Megaplier. I was speechless when I realized."

How will the couple spend the winnings?

Norma and Paul have three children and five grandchildren. They plan on using the winnings to help their family and fix their house, as well as pay off debts and contribute money to the church that they attend.

The couple have opted to split the prize winnings, and will each receive a cash lump sum of $1,654,500 after tax withholdings. You can find out more about taxes on Mega Millions prizes in each state on the Taxes page.

Paul described how it felt to win the lottery, saying, “It's a change. You realize you can go into a store and buy something and not worry about where the money is coming from."
