Mega Millions has reached a massive $266 million, making it the highest jackpot around the globe right now.
Mega Millions Results for Tuesday, May 12
Mega Millions is reaching the skies! With a total of 26 rollovers since the last jackpot win back on February 11, 2020, the Mega Millions jackpot is now the biggest lottery prize in the world. The sum of $266 million, with a cash option of $210.1 million, is waiting to be snatched, with the next Mega Millions draw taking place this Friday, May 15 at 23:00 EST.
Since the jackpot rolled over, this means that last night’s draw did not see any Mega Millions jackpot winners. The winning numbers for the draw that took place on Tuesday, May 12, were:
7 - 16 - 27 - 44 - 52 - Megaball 5
The Megaplier was 5x. The jackpot for this draw was an estimated $248 million, with a cash option of $197.4 million. Two tickets managed to match all of the five main numbers and shared a prize of $1 million. One of the tickets was bought in New York and the other was bought in California.
More lotteries could be pushed online because of Coronavirus
We all know that the world is not in the best state right now. A number of countries are on lockdown due to COVID-19 and that means that most shops had to close, including retail lottery agents. This forces state lotteries to experience a substantial decline in revenue. Gordon Medenica, director of the Mega Millions Consortium and CEO of the Maryland Lottery explained how Maryland Lottery saw a 30% decrease in revenue in just the first three weeks of the closure of non-essential businesses.
Mega Millions has already announced some changes to its jackpot rules in the recent days. Lotteries have not been suspended yet, since they are deemed to be essential due to their charitable missions. However, only 8 states provide the option to play their lottery online, whereas in other states, players have to buy lottery tickets in person. Given that players would experience a higher risk of exposure this way, lottery sales have plummeted. Giving players the option to play lotteries online could be the only solution to improve state lottery revenues.
