Indiana Family Claim $536 Million Mega Millions Jackpot

Indiana Family Claim $536 Million Mega Millions Jackpot

Excitement amongst Mega Millions lottery fans in Indiana has been growing, as the record jackpot of $536 million has been claimed by a family in Hamilton County. The family purchased five Mega Millions tickets “on a whim”, as the jackpot had grown to a huge amount after 34 draws without a jackpot winner. The win is currently the largest jackpot won on a single ticket in Mega Millions history.

Record Jackpot

As well as being the largest win on a single ticket, the claim is also the largest jackpot to be won in the history of the Hoosier Lottery and is the third biggest win in the Mega Millions game, surpassing the $414 million jackpot which was won by two players on March 18th, 2014. Where was the winning ticket sold?

The winning ticket for the Mega Millions drawing on July 8th was sold at the Speedway, located at 1589 N State Road 1 in Cambridge City. The ticket matched the five main numbers of 8, 19, 20, 55, 73 and the Mega Ball which was number 5. You can check the total winners and payouts for the drawing on the July 8th on its dedicated page here.

The family bought the ticket when they were heading out of state on a trip for their children’s sporting activities. When the family found out that they had won the Mega Millions jackpot, they “couldn’t believe it”.

What will the family buy with the winnings?

Lauren Littlefield, a spokesperson for the family said, “The family feels extremely blessed but also overwhelmed.” She also commented on what the family plan to do with their new-found fortune, saying “They have chosen to remain private to protect the safety and well-being of their children. Their priorities are to use the winnings to pay off debt, plan for their children’s futures, and take care of their family long-term. They intend to continue raising their children here and supporting other Hoosiers.”

The family chose to accept the cash lump-sum of $378 million before taxes, rather than the 30-year annuity. The family will receive a total of $271 million after taxes. You can check how much tax you would pay on a Mega Millions prize on the Taxes page.
